McDonough Student Advisory Council (McSAC)

McSAC serves as a critical link between the McDonough student body and the dean. This Council seeks feedback from leadership students and advises the dean on a regular basis. The dean, in consultation with the McDonough faculty and staff, appoints the McSAC chair – usually a rising senior who has distinguished himself/herself as a “leader among leaders.”

The other Council members are selected through an election process through which the leadership students vote for representatives from their respective classes. The Council chair seeks nominations from each class. McDonough Scholars can nominate themselves or others whom they feel would best represent their collective interests. The nominees appear on the ballot, and the top two vote recipients from each class become members of the Council. The next two vote recipients become “alternates,” in case the elected members are unable to fulfill their obligations for any reason. Council members, including the chair, serve for a full academic year.

Participation in this Council gives McDonough Scholars an opportunity to practice critical leadership skills (teamwork, planning, problem solving, strategic thinking, decision-making). They also gain valuable insights into leadership in a democratic society. While experience on this Council certainly adds value to a student’s resume, the McDonough faculty and staff see this Council as an opportunity for the students to participate in the Center’s decision-making process. Therefore, the Council’s duties and responsibilities have to be carried out with commitment and integrity.
