McDonough Scholar Summer Plans
RACHEL BAUGHMAN (Sophomore, History/Secondary Education Double Major and Teacher Leadership Certificate from Kent, OH) will be performing in two dance reviews, one for the Marietta Dance Academy as an instructor and the other for All About Dance by Kristen as an alumni in Stow, OH. She will begin working in June at Camp Asbury in Hiram, OH as a resident counselor, receiving Challenge Course Facilitator Training. Beyond this, she hopes to spend a significant amount of time laughing with friends, catching up with family and looking forward to another awesome year at MC! KATY BLACK (Senior, Psychology Major, Leadership Studies Minor from Canal Winchester, OH) will be working and interning as a camp counselor at Camp Frederick in North Eastern Ohio for the summer. There, she will have the opportunity to practice and strengthen her leadership skills with a variety of ages during their weeklong stays at camp. Katy will help supervise her campers as they engage in team building, swimming, hiking, tree climbing, nature walks, crafts, horseback riding, creek stomping, and other exciting activities. STEPHANIE GELO (Senior, International Business Management/International Leadership Studies Double Major from Postville, IA) will be living in Beijing, China until July 29 th, where she is currently working as a private English tutor for two students. While living with a family in Beijing, she plans to continue tutoring and hopes to secure an internship. Job permitting, she also hopes to travel to Qingdao, Jiangsu Province, and Inner Mongolia. When she returns to the United States, she will spend about a week-and-a-half with her family and then fly to Marietta on August 12th to be an International Orientation Leader. ANNA GILL (Sophomore, Middle Childhood Education Major and Teacher Leadership Certificate from Canal Winchester, OH) will spent the first week of her summer in Northern Michigan at Chapter Focus Week, planning and structuring the coming semester for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, of which she is on the Leadership Team. She also plans to be working for ten weeks this summer at Camp Otterbein, a Methodist summer camp in Logan, Ohio where she will be one of the head chefs for the camp, in charge of preparing meals, ordering food and supplies, and supporting her two assistant cooks. She also hopes to be traveling to Michigan, New Jersey, and Maryland to visit with friends and family. DAVE JOHNSON (Junior, Petroleum Engineering Major and Leadership Certificate from Pickerington, OH) will be an Engineering Field Intern with Anadarko Petroleum in Casper, Wyoming. Rather than being in an office, Dave will be out at an oil field. Due to the significant age of the field to which he is traveling, Dave will be working with production, which will entail finding new ways to get oil wells to produce more oil. Following a one to two week introduction to his job, Dave will dive headfirst into a major production, marking the first time that he has had the chance to work with oil. JOSHUA MAXWELL (Junior, International Leadership Studies Major, Economics Minor from Houston, TX) will be interning at the McDonough Center for Leadership and Business from May through mid-July. As part of his job, he will be assisting in every day functions of the Center, as well as prepare various materials for this fall’s EXCEL Workshop. During the month of May, he will be traveling to Boston to attend the America’s Best Leaders conference convened by Harvard University, where a selection committee will deliberate on the many profiles written by students of the Marietta College research team (of which Joshua is a member), as well teams from other schools. In July, Joshua will be traveling to Guatemala and Belize with the LEAD 350 class for three weeks, emmersing himself in the culture and participating in a variety of service projects. JOSHUA MICKLE (Senior, Health Science Major, Psychology Minor, and Leadership Certificate from Madison, OH) will be shadowing Occupational and Physical Therapists in the Pediatric Therapy Department of Marietta Memorial Hospital. His shadowing will include sitting in on individual therapy sessions with therapists and their patients, of which the patients range from infancy to ten years of age and are impaired either physically or mentally. Occasionally, he will also follow the therapists to local elementary schools and sit in on Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings regarding the patients they are treating. On campus, Joshua will be working in the Marietta College Admissions Office as one of the summer tour guides. Towards the end of the summer, he will be traveling to Guatemala and Belize with the LEAD 350 class. KYLE THAUVETTE (Senior, Organizational Communications Major and Leadership Certificate from Dalton, OH) will be doing an internship at the Canton Mayor's Office in Canton, Ohio. His duties include speech and proclamation writing, as well as writing pamphlets, letters from the mayor, introductions for the mayor, and website development. He will also spend a large portion of his time proofreading other speeches, pamphlets, and brochures. His internship has already given him the opportunity to improve his grammar use and has shown him the innerworkings of government. EMMA VIERHELLER (Sophomore, International Leadership Studies/Political Science Double Major from Orrville, OH) will be volunteering at the Division III National Track and Field Championships, hosted by Marietta College, near the end of May. Following the track meet, she will be traveling to Honesdale, PA to coach gymnastics at Lake Camp Bryn Mawr, a 7-week sleepaway sports camp. She will be coaching gymnastics to girls of ages 6-16 and living in a cabin with a group of campers. LAUREN YANKO (Junior, Graphic Design Major, Leadership Studies and Spanish Minors, Leaders-in-Action Certificate from Akron, OH) will be combining her love of the outdoors and of athletics by working as a statistician for both Men's and Co-Ed softball teams. She will also be shadowing designers in various professions in the graphic design field. In July, she will travel to Guatemala and Belize with several of her friends, all of whom are taking the LEAD 350 class. There, she will teach art classes as well as take part in service projects and leadership lessons, in addition to engaging in snorkeling on the Barrier Reef and visiting the Mayan Ruins. |
