Gwen Chamberlain, ‘09 Advice: Not only is it really hot, but time functions very differently. Nothing we did was when it was schedule to be. You really have to just go with the flow and be patient. "This trip gave me the unique opportunity to see the culture of an African nation while traveling with the safety of the College. The service aspect of our trip was an amazing. The people in that village were truly happy we were there. Our presence gave them hope. The traveling across the country allowed us to see the culture from many different aspects."
Shauna Payne, '09 "My volunteer experience abroad in Ghana, West Africa, was one that I will never forget. Before going, I was worried about the possibility of experiencing culture shock, however the trip advisers did an excellent job preparing us for it. The Ghanaian atmosphere was different than any I've ever experienced within the United States- it is very laid-back and relaxed. Don't expect anything to be on time! Although we typically would classify most Ghanaians as poor, I have never met a group of people as happy or as eager to share their culture as they are. My time in Ghana really opened my eyes to the world that exists beyond our American borders. If presented again with the opportunity to visit, I would go back to Ghana in a heartbeat."
Grace O'Dell, '10 "I really enjoyed studying in Morocco because it was such a different and unique experience. My favorite portion of my semester was my three-day trip to the Sahara desert. After a full day of traveling, we spent three days riding camels and two nights sleeping in tents in the middle of the desert. It was wonderful. I would recommend studying abroad in Morocco simply because it was such an unexpected, unique experience and something I'm never going to forget. My only recommendation is some knowledge of any of the languages spoken in Morocco. I didn't know any French, Arabic, or Moroccan Arabic and there were definitely times when communication became stressful because of that. Overall, I enjoyed my semester and I wouldn't have done anything differently."
Kay Johnson, '12 People to People Student Ambassador Program- South Africa "I went to CapeTown and went to Kruger National Park where we stayed overnight for about 3 days. We went on a safari and on Christmas day we spent the day at an orphanage playing with kids." |
